The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 同志题材也能拍出很不错的电影，悬疑气氛做的非常到位，故事也很有情节，都是历史的污点，只能说现在社会包容度高了，在那个年代真不知道怎么活～
和恐怖片没有啥关系，非常深沉的主题。前半部分不知道在说什么，故弄玄虚，当主角开始体验他人生命，一切如此清晰，live & love，体验生命的快乐与爱。太棒了

多少人因为害怕被荼毒，而选择深柜结婚生子，就有多少家庭悲剧。
隐约的感觉，让我想起了遥远的《第七封印》。影片讲了很多，终极歌颂了母性。
太慢了！本来是个被女巫收养的故事，对人世间充满好奇心的故事，取材不错啊，摄影很好呀。但往胸口装谁的内脏就变成谁的样子的设定，太扯了。难道是为了逻辑，说得过去，并且绕开科学解释的硬伤吗？
节奏感还行，不断深挖的剧情，人物的变化也很清晰，算是值得一看的电影

海报满分，犹如一本神秘小说的封面。电影三颗星。令人眼前一亮的女巫故事，或者说是一部披着恐怖片外衣的女性视角文艺片。奈何结尾稍显遗憾，走了“女本柔弱为母则刚”的路数，针对全片集中讨论的有关人在不同身份下的自我认同与外部世界联系这一话题，导演没能给出更具想象力的答案。
全片色彩也很棒，但不知道为什么，但凡跟俄罗斯（附近）地区挂钩的电影，画面都会充斥着冷色调，大概跟寒冷的气候有关吧。那段历史也会让人不寒而栗。
平淡又稀松的叙事风格，其实就是男主在追查一起谋杀案后对自我身份认知的一个过程。原来幕后对同志赶尽杀绝的是同为同志的警察头子，最后才发现严厉的父亲其实是为了儿子的安全不要把自己卷进这个事件而丢掉性命。全片并没有对男主对自己身份认知后展开多少描述，最精彩的一场床戏结束后便将二人的关系直接收尾拉至逃亡就剧终了，制造了纪录片的感觉，但作为剧情片实在是差了一点东西，有完未完的剧情差强人意。

主角塑造得有点扁，连他搭档都比他形象圆，实在是个败笔……但是如果说他的特质就是intensity，同Arek所代表的幼稚的“自由”相对，好像又可以说服我自己……片子的部分内容让我感觉，其实导演虽然在拍这样一个群体，但是对群体的关注非常随便，故事是集中在Robert崩断的那根线上，从而把视线投向更宏大的主体（压迫、官僚），而抛弃了深刻省察这种文化特质的机会……把角色扁平化，一方面确实可以在渲染背景上走到极致，一方面，却又太“东欧”了，如果只把同性恋当做受害者刻画……唉我说不下去了，我懂导演想拍出manipulative的感觉，但是主角能不能就是，不要像个提线木偶。？
我怕是我上辈子没烧够香，才沦落到看这种电影。
做为一个恐怖片 你将不再孤单 最恐怖的是一点都不恐怖，大段的内心独白和写意镜头，还以为是个爱情文艺片。故事有点 画皮 的意思，不算开篇又臭又长的前史，后面80分钟讲了四个故事四种身份。看上去都有关联，但每一个都没讲透。如果不是想看妖怪最后会不会吃人，早睡着了。
小女巫变形计，配乐也非常生命之树，去个戛纳，来几个明星肯定火
